If you go down to your local DIY store you will no doubt be able to pick up a roll of itchy mineral wool insulation for not much money. However, there’s not much going for it other than the cheap price!
Our sheep wool insulation a premium product. We’ve got loads of reasons why you should go down the natural, sustainable route!
SHEEP WOOL IS A FANTASTIC INSULATOR!
If you have ever seen sheep in the wild, you’ll know they look pretty comfortable! While, in northern Europe, us suckers often have to wear lots of clothes to keep warm, sheep on the other hand have a ready-made coat to protect them from extreme weather. Sheep wool fibres are crimped so when they are positioned on top of one another, they produce hundreds of millions of tiny air pockets.
These trapped air pockets create an amazing thermal barrier, helping to slow the movement of heat from one side of the wool to the other. The 100% pure sheep wool we offer has a thermal efficiency far superior to traditional mineral wool (sheep wool is 0.0385 W/mK compared to 0.044 W/mK for mineral wool. This means your energy savings will be much higher when swapping for the same amount of sheep wool.
SHEEP WOOL INSULATION DOESN’T ITCH!
This is one of the best features of sheep wool to be honest – it doesn’t itch. If you have ever installed mineral wool insulation yourself you will no how miserable it is to work with, itching for a week afterwards. Our sheep wool insulation is an absolute breeze to work with, you don’t need any protective clothing and it can be cut to size with a knife if required. For many of our customers, this is the main reason they opt for sheep wool.
SHEEP WOOL INSULATION IS BREATHABLE!
Sheep wool is hydroscopic, which means it can absorb and release moisture from the surrounding air without any negative impact on its insulating capability – this means essentially it can regulate humidity.
Sheep wool can absorb up to 33% of its own weight in moisture, but why is this property actually important? Well if air-borne moisture is allowed to build up within a building it may lead to surface condensation, which can cause mould. The main issue though is that if water condenses and comes in to contact with timber in the roof space, that timber may begin to rot. If the sheep wool is installed within walls, it can actually prevent damp coming through them completely.
SHEEP WOOL ENCOURAGES A HEALTHY CLIMATE IN THE HOME
Sheep wool fibres are made of keratin, which is a protein that has the ability to absorb and neutralise harmful substances such as formaldehyde. Formaldehyde is typically used in the manufacture of building materials and household products and it has long been associated with irritations of the nasal canal, watery eyes, and burning sensations in the eyes, nose, and throat. Therefore by installing sheep wool insulation in your home you are putting in a natural purifying system, improving the quality of the air and hopefully improving the wellbeing of everyone in your house.
SHEEP WOOL INSULATION DOESN’T BURN
A great feature of sheep wool is that it doesn’t burn – it has an extremely high nitrogen content so instead of burning it singes away from the flame and then self extinguishes. Now obviously we hope this never needs testing, but it is good to know that you have a sort of fire blanket in place if you do install it.
OUR SHEEP WOOL IS TREATED TO PREVENT INFESTATIONS
But we have kept it as eco as possible because we think that it’s a shame taking a 100% natural product and then adding chemicals! Unlike other companies who treat their insulation with poisonous insecticides, our treatment is chemical-free.
To find a way to do this, we had to go back to nature. We started by trying to identify naturally occurring wool out in the wild that moths never try to eat. There is actually only one product – and that is the silk produced by spiders. We use a process- known as plasma ionic treatment – to alter the surface of the sheep wool so that it resembles the inedible spiders’ silk. It the first treatment of its kind in the world and comprehensive (and lengthy) testing has come back 100% positive.
Our 100% pure sheep wool insulation really is now the most eco friendly insulation product in the world! It even carries the prestigious natureplus certificate.
100% PURE SHEEP WOOL INSULATION IS 100% SUSTAINABLE!
Sheep wool is just about the only 100% sustainable insulating product. Certainly compared to mineral wool, sheep wool comes out on top. We reckon the only comparable insulating product on environmental grounds is hemp insulation, but any cellulose product suffers when moisture comes into play. Sheep wool is also made to last – remember if you are going to invest in this, it will last you a lifetime.
SHEEPWOOL4HOMES IS THE ONLY PLACE TO GET 100% SHEEP WOOL INSULATION
We know some of our competitors talk about their sheep wool products as if they are 100% pure – they are not! They tend to use a plastic binder in the product so if you want 100% natural sheep wool make sure you shop with us!
